What the shelf price may—and may not—include
Most basic groceries are zero-rated for GST/HST across Canada, including many fresh, frozen, canned, and staple foods. Some products—such as certain candy, snack foods, carbonated beverages, prepared foods, and non-food items—can be taxable. Do not assume every item in a grocery store has the same tax treatment.
A beverage container deposit is different from sales tax. In BC, eligible ready-to-drink beverage containers participate in a deposit-refund system. The receipt may show the deposit separately, and containers can be returned through accepted collection locations.
Read the unit before comparing the number
| Display | Meaning | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| $3.99 ea. | $3.99 for one package/item | Check the net quantity on the package |
| $1.29/100 g | $1.29 for each 100 grams | Compare with another /100 g price |
| $3.99/lb | $3.99 per pound | Convert to $/kg if the other label uses kilograms |
| 2 for $7 | Promoted total for two | Check whether one receives a proportional price |
| Member price | Price tied to stated program conditions | Identify the card/account/action required |
Produce and self-checkout workflow
- For loose produce, notice whether it is priced each or by weight.
- Use an in-aisle scale only as an estimate unless the store directs otherwise; the checkout trade scale determines the sale weight.
- At self-checkout, search for the produce name or enter its PLU code when requested.
- Place the item on the scale without adding unrelated items or bags unless the machine instructs you.
- Ask the attendant when the item, price, or quantity does not match; do not guess a different product code.
Bring bags and keep the receipt
In BC, businesses generally offer the option to use your own bag or go without one, while regulated minimum charges apply to new recycled-paper and qualifying reusable shopping bags, with exceptions. Bringing clean reusable bags avoids a last-minute bag purchase.
Keep the receipt until you have checked member prices, quantity discounts, deposits, taxes, and weighed items. It is also the most useful record for learning your household’s usual prices.
First-month grocery checklist
- Choose a nearby store and set the correct location before reading its digital flyer.
- Learn /100 g, /kg, /lb, each, limit, selected varieties, and while quantities last.
- Join a loyalty program only after reading what the price or points require; programs are not identical.
- Compare a small group of staples across receipts instead of trying to memorize every price.
- Plan a list, one acceptable substitute per key item, and a total spending boundary.
